Raise your hand if you’ve ever finished a sink full of dishes and noticed your hands felt tight, dry, or a little irritated afterward.
For years, I just assumed that was normal. “Dish soap dries you out, that’s just how it is,” right? Except… is it, really? Or is it another example of us brushing off a symptom that’s actually trying to tell us something?
The Everyday Product We Don’t Think Twice About
Dish soap is one of those products we use multiple times a day without ever reading the label. We just grab the bottle by the sink, squeeze, and go. But many conventional formulas are built with harsh detergents, synthetic dyes, and fragrance blends that can strip your skin’s natural barrier and trigger reactions like dryness, redness, or small rashes – especially for kids who “help” with dishes or for anyone with sensitive skin.
This is part of a bigger pattern I’ve noticed since I started paying closer attention: the hidden toxic chemicals in cleaning products we use every single day tend to hide in plain sight, in the products we trust the most simply because we’ve used them our whole lives.
It’s Not Just Your Hands
Think about it this way… if a product is strong enough to strip grease off a pan, what is it doing to the skin on your hands, day after day, wash after wash? For some people, it shows up as dry patches or eczema flare-ups. For others, it’s a rash that seems to come and go for no clear reason. We rarely think to connect it back to the bottle sitting by our sink.
I’m not telling you this to make you anxious about your dish soap. I promise, that’s not the point of any of this. The point is simply this… once you start asking “what’s actually in this?” you start noticing things you never noticed before. And once you notice, you get to choose differently.
A Gentle Shift, Not a Total Overhaul
You don’t have to throw everything out today. When I started making changes in my own home, I didn’t do it all at once – I started with the products my family touched the most, and dish soap was one of the easiest first swaps I made. A gentle, plant-based formula still cuts through grease, but it doesn’t leave your hands feeling raw by the end of the night.
Awareness isn’t about guilt. It’s not about judging anyone for the products in their cabinet right now – most of us grew up around these same brands for decades, and there was no reason to question them. This is simply about noticing the hidden toxic chemicals in cleaning products we’ve normalized, and giving ourselves permission to choose something gentler once we know better.
